Have you ever noticed how hungry playing in the water makes you? I don’t care if you are swimming in the lake or floating around a geothermal dome…starving!
After checking out the Homestead Crater in Midway, Utah (Check!) Pierce and I set off to find some food. Despite the fact that we are in Mormon Country a surprising number of restaurants are advertised on the web as open on Sunday. I don’t know if the web pages were wrong, or if the schedule was different because it was Mother’s Day…but things were looking bleak as we checked out several restaurants that had been on my hit list, only to find them closed or closing. Poor Pierce. I was getting hangry.
We found a fantastic spot called the Back 40 Ranch House Grill (https://www.back40utah.com/ ) in nearby Heber City. We rolled out there and found a mass exodus of people leaving so we easily found parking right up front! For about 3 minutes we thought it was our lucky day, only to find out that is because they were ending the Mother’s Day lunch/brunch crowd and were going to close for an hour until 5 to swap out crews for the dinner crowd. Bummer. Hangrier. We asked if we need a reservation for two, which made them laugh and they said no…just come back at 5.
We left to wander through Heber City and look at the cool architecture but along the way got completely distracted by a brewery sign. Heber Valley Brewing Company (https://www.hebervalleybrewing.com/) …surely they have pub food we can have as an appetizer? And since we are here, we might as well have a beer! 😉 I tried the Ascent Amber. I really should broaden my horizons, but then I have a yummy Amber like this one and ask myself, “why?”. It was very good and hit the spot, crisp, clean, caramelly, and along with a few nibbles off Pierce’s huge soft pretzel…ahhhhhh. Pierce tried the Cold Fusion Kolsch and not my fave, but judging by how quickly that and the pretzel disappeared, I think it was 2 thumbs up in his mind.
Back to the Back 40 Ranch House Grill….but it looked like the swap out had not happened. At 5:02 every spot was taken…no front row parking for us this time. And even better, a waiting line trailing out the door…whaaa? Luckily the hostess recognized us. We could tell by the look of despair she sent us. Oh damn. I should have had more pretzel.
She was telling everyone a 20-30 minute wait…this tells me more of the restaurants should consider being open on Sundays. But when she looked at us, she just nodded, held up a finger and went off in search of a spot to stash us. Came back and said she found a high-top for two in a corner. Sold!
Pierce had been craving a big juicy burger and that is what he got…The Back 40 burger described like this:
Back 40 Burger local, organic grass-fed beef, lettuce, tomato, caramelized onions, pastrami, Heber Valley Creamery jalapeno bacon cheddar, special sauce choice of parmesan parsley fries, sweet potato fries, or side salad
He held the pastrami…it IS a little overwhelming..lol…and devoured it in record time declaring it to be phenomonel.
I ordered the Steak Frites for the first time in my life. When they advertise the beef is local in a ranching community, it just seems to be the right thing to do. I also wanted to say Steak Frites. Admittedly I had to look up the proper pronunciation before I ordered. While this dish nothing more than a steak and fries…it is French and varies from restaurant to restaurant.
Steak Frites 8oz local, organic flat iron, crisp potato, pico de gallo, chimichurri, grilled asparagus
A fantastic meal and what a great day in Heber City and Midway, UT. Thanks for your hospitality!
